Interview with Islamic Society President at 2:00PM
Our interview with Kent Union President was cancelled!

Yesterday we filmed the Anglican Chaplain, Revd. Stephen but our interview with the University’s Accommodation Customer Services Advisor, Coralie Norwood, was cancelled as she was on sick leave.

This is what I did today:
- This evening I filmed the sports fields near Parkwood: there were some matches against Christchurch on.
- I also filmed the CPAS Gospel Choir rehearsals until I ran out of tape!
- I met (albeit accidentally) with the Anglican Chaplain and confirmed our meeting tomorrow.
- I also spoke to the University Publicity Office and I’m going to pick up my filming permit tomorrow.
Another productive day, the only disappointment was I did not manage to call the Muslim Chaplain.

This is the basic format of the questions I have sent the chaplains to prepare for the interview. It is slightly adapted to suit each chaplain before sending it.
1. Please introduce yourself
(e.g. My name is… I am the chaplain of.. and my role involves…)
2. Please briefly explain the beliefs of your chaplaincy
3. How are the university students involved in your community
(e.g. do they regularly attend services, meetings?
are they involved in other areas such as leadership, administration, etc)
4. Is your community quite international? Please explain this more.
(e.g. do you know how many nationalities are represented,
do you communicate with other communities of your religion around the world, etc)
5. Do you have any advice or thoughts you would like to pass on to new international students coming to the university?
(e.g. do you feel they will feel welcome here,
are they any areas you feel they should be careful or wary about)
6. Is there anything else you would like to add?
I have given example answers but please do not feel limited to answer in that format. If there are any questions you feel confused about, please contact me. Or if there are any you would prefer not to answer, we will happily remove them. The last question is for you to add anything that you feel we missed out and that you believe would be useful to our project.
The religious leaders have been responding positively to my emails. So in addition to the others, this is the current schedule of interviews that has been set up:
- Thursday, 24th Jan, at 3.00pm – Anglican Chaplain
- Friday, 25th Jan, at 2:00pm – Accommodation Office
- Sunday, 27th Jan, after service – Pentecostal Leadership Team member
- Monday, 28th Jan, at 1.00pm – President of Kent Union
- Monday, 28th Jan, at 3.00pm – Quaker Chaplain
- Tuesday, 29th Jan, at 1.00pm – Student Activities Sabbatical
- Tuesday, 29th Jan, at 3.00pm – Buddhist Chaplain
The Muslim Chaplain asked me to call and set up a meeting, so that will be confirmed later today hopefully.
I am still waiting for responses from the Methodist, Catholic and Jewish chaplains; the Accommodation Office; the Registry; and the International Office.
We got some positive responses from the Religious leaders this evening:
- The Anglican Chaplain has agreed to meet us this Thursday, 24th Jan, at 3.00pm.
- The Quaker Chaplain has agreed to meet us next Monday, 28th Jan, at 3.00pm.
Now we need to find some appropriate questions for them.
Today we wrote down a list of everything we hope to accomplish in the next 2 weeks:
One of the things that we wrote down was setting up interviews with various people we hope to include in the pack. We went round to different offices around campus and this is the results we got today:
- BANKS – Barclays said they could not do a filmed interview because of security issues. NatWest asked us to come back tomorrow when the manager would be around
- Accommodation Office – we went there yesterday and were given a email address. We sent the email, but are still waiting for the response.
- Registry – The Academic Registrar agreed to an interview and we were given his PA’s email to set up a time
- International Office – The heads of the office are away until Thursday, and we are still waiting for a response to our email.
- Religious leaders – Akaliza visited a member of the Pentecostal Church leadership team and set up an interview for this weekend. The other leaders have been emailed, and we are waiting for a response.
- Kent Union – We set an interview with James Bull, Student Activities Sabbatical, on Tuesday at 13:00 and Archie, the Union President on Monday at 13:00.
Overall, its been quite a productive day!
